You can’t get much more sustainable than a shipping container house, not just reclaimed materials but recycled rooms!

This home on Throsby Creek in Newcastle, Australia was designed by Murray James Design and built using 5 repurposed shipping containers. More recently the owner decided to create two separate Airbnb properties, one on each floor. She sought the help of interior designer Alicia Doyle from Ramble Interiors to pull it all together.

Due to covid restrictions at the time, Alicia carried out a solo inspection of the property and followed this up with a 90 minutes zoom consult. The owner had already purchased a leather lounge and armchair on Facebook Marketplace which she wanted to use, along with some artworks. As the container style had built in industrial and eclectic elements this was drawn upon in creating a mood board and a design guide for the owner to use for sourcing the furniture and homewares.

Once everything was purchased (mainly from Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and a few pieces from Lunatiques in Sydney), Alicia styled all the pieces into a cohesive look.

The end result is a beautiful, eclectic space built on shared values of sustainability, uniqueness and character with a design that befits the personality inherent in a shipping container house.
